D'Iberville Elementary Named Blue Ribbon School

D'Iberville Elementary Named 2020 National Blue Ribbon School

(HARRISON COUNTY, MS) Being selected as a National Blue Ribbon School is already a huge achievement for any school. Achieving that prestigious award for the second time is even more remarkable! That’s what happened on September 24, 2020, when D’Iberville Elementary School was named a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School.

“I’m very excited and proud of the staff and the students of our school,” said D’Iberville Elementary Principal, Cindy Dusang.

Students, teachers, and staff at the school were surprised and thrilled as they watched the official announcement via a live link. D’Iberville Elementary was nominated for the award by the Mississippi Department of Education, and it is one of only four schools in the state to be named a National Blue Ribbon School this year. This coveted award is given by the U.S. Department of Education to public and non-public schools that are producing outstanding results for all students.

This is the second National Blue Ribbon honor for D’Iberville Elementary. The school was awarded its first National Blue Ribbon in 2009 for being an exemplary high-performing school, as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. This time, D’Iberville Elementary earned the prestigious distinction based on its progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“It means our teachers and our faculty are growing every student in our school and we’re very proud of the accomplishments we have made here at D’Iberville Elementary School,” said Dusang.

D’Iberville Elementary is a Mississippi A-rated school and its tradition of academic excellence continues to flourish in a rapidly-growing community. Over the past decade, the school has experienced tremendous changes in demographics. With increases in student enrollment, economically-disadvantaged population, and English language learners, teachers quickly adapted by creatively designing lessons to reach each student. Being named a National Blue Ribbon School once again shows D’Iberville Elementary’s dedication to raising the bar on academic standards.

“Our teachers begin in kindergarten working very hard with our students who are below grade level and it continues through third grade. As third graders, everyone knows they have to pass the state assessment to move on to fourth grade. If they’re ready for that assessment, they’re ready to move on and keep learning and will succeed in life,” said Dusang.
