HCSD Hosts First National SRO Training in South MS

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (June 14, 2021) – The Harrison County School District is honored to host a national school resource officer training program this week as part of efforts to help make schools safer.

About 60 school resource officers from across Mississippi, including 14 in HCSD, are undergoing a basic SRO course at the HCSD Center for Excellence. Topics on the agenda included the role of an SRO, improving communication skills, how to deescalate a situation, law enforcement, threat assessment, serving as a guest speaker and mentor, and how to work more effectively in a school environment.

For the first time, MDE has recognized the National Association of School Resource Officers organization as a trainer for SROs and this training program is required for officers to be recognized by MDE as a certified SRO. The training is in conjunction with the MASRO conference that is taking place in Hancock County this week.
