HCSD Schools Distribute Free Books to Students

HCSD Schools Distribute Thousands of Free Books to Students

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (May 24, 2021 – Over 13,000 students in the Harrison County School District went home on Monday with a special gift! HCSD schools distributed free Reading Kits to all K-11th grade students. Each kit contained an assortment of books that are appropriate for the different grade levels.

HCSD teachers are encouraging our students to add the books to their home library collection and set aside some time for reading this summer. In general, research shows that providing children access to print materials accomplishes the following:

• Improves reading performance. Among the studies reviewed, kindergarten students showed the biggest increase;

• Is instrumental in helping them learn the basics of reading, such as letter and word identification, phonemic awareness, and completion of sentences;

• Prompts them to read more frequently and for greater amounts of time;

• Improves their attitudes toward reading and learning.

We hope our families enjoy the gift of reading!
