Nine HCSD Schools Awarded Fruit & Veggie Grant

USDA Awards Fruit & Veggie Grant to Nine HCSD Schools

(HARRISON COUNTY, MS) The Harrison County School District is excited to announce the expansion of a federal program that provides free, healthy, and delicious fruits and veggies to our students. The USDA has approved grants for the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program at the following nine elementary schools:

• Bel-Aire Elementary

• Crossroads Elementary

• D’Iberville Elementary

• Harrison Central Elementary

• Orange Grove Elementary

• Pineville Elementary

• River Oaks Elementary

• Three Rivers Elementary

• Woolmarket Elementary

Each day, students at those schools will receive either packaged fresh fruit or vegetables with dip. The program is free for students, in addition to other food/snack programs that are currently on campus. As funds allow, the Child Nutrition Department will provide non-traditional items that may be new and exciting for students to try.

"In four short years, we have grown this competitive grant program from two schools and $40,000 to nine sites and just over $300,000. We are incredibly grateful to the USDA for the generous awards,” said HCSD Child Nutrition Director, Brad Barlow. “I appreciate our schools’ assistance with this initiative to shape our student’s lifelong healthy eating habits.”

Schools must meet USDA eligibility guidelines in order to participate. Click here for additional information about the program: https://fns-prod.azureedge.net/sites/default/files/resource-files/FFVPFactSheet.pdf
