Harrison County School District Achieves Another A Rating

(September 17, 2024) – We are incredibly pleased to announce that the Harrison County School District has once again earned an A rating!
 
 According to the 2023-2024 Accountability Grades released by the Mississippi Department of Education this morning, HCSD scored 716 total points on the 2023-24 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) and is ranked in the top 25 school districts in the state of Mississippi! West Harrison High deserves special recognition for continuing its remarkable academic performance by earning the ranking of “#2 High School in Mississippi”.

  HCSD has five B-rated schools:
 
 1. Harrison Central High
 2. Bel-Aire Elementary
 3. River Oaks Elementary
 4. West Harrison Middle
 5. Harrison Central Elementary
 
 Among the highlights of MAAP, HCSD ranks #1 in Mississippi in 3rd Grade Math, 5th Grade Math, 6th Grade Math, and 5th Grade Science. Lizana Elementary took the top spot in the state in three subjects: 5th Grade Math, 6th Grade Math, and 5th Grade Science. It should be noted that this is the fourth year in a row that Lizana has ranked #1 in the state in 6th Grade Math. West Wortham Elementary & Middle School should also be commended for earning the highest ranking in the state in 3rd Grade Math. Plus, nine schools in HCSD are ranked among the top 20 in the state in various subject area tests.

Mississippi’s accountability grades help teachers, school leaders, parents and communities know how well their local schools and districts are serving their students. The components of the state’s accountability system are based on state and federal law and State Board policy. They include:
 · Student proficiency and growth rates in ELA and Mathematics in grades 3-8
 · Growth of the lowest performing 25% of students in ELA and Mathematics
 · Science proficiency in grades 5 and 8
 · English Learner progress toward becoming proficient in the English language
 · Performance on the ACT and high school Algebra I, English II, Biology and U.S. History assessments
 · Student participation and performance in advanced coursework such as Advanced Placement, career and technical education programs and dual credit/dual enrollment courses
 · Four-year graduation rate:
 1. West Harrison High – 91.2%
 2. D’Iberville High – 87.3%
 3. Harrison Central High – 87%
