WHHS Field House Dedicated to Retired Superintendent Mitchell King

(September 20, 2024) – It was an exciting day in the Harrison County School District as we dedicated the new West Harrison Hurricanes Field House in honor of retired Superintendent Mitchell King! Family, friends, school board members, staff, alumni, and students gathered this morning for the special ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour.
 
Naming the state-of-the-art, 13,069-square-foot field house after Mr. King is a fitting tribute to his educational legacy. It recognizes his 55 years of service to HCSD and his countless contributions to academic excellence, and the importance of athletics and extracurricular activities for student success.
 
The field house is a modern athletic facility designed to enhance both the physical and strategic training of student-athletes. It features two specialized classrooms, one for offensive and the other for defensive instruction. The classrooms are equipped with the latest video and interactive learning technology to break down plays, review game footage, and develop game strategies in a focused environment.
 
The field house is also outfitted with brand-new weight training equipment, offering athletes a comprehensive range of strength and conditioning resources. The expansive weight room is complemented by a dedicated trainer’s room, fully equipped for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and daily athletic care. The field house is fully Title IX compliant, ensuring equal access and opportunities for both male and female athletes. The facility is designed to meet the needs of all student-athletes, providing equitable resources, training spaces, and support systems in line with Title IX requirements. This commitment to fairness and inclusion reflects the school’s dedication to fostering a positive and competitive environment for all its sports programs.
 
In addition, the facility includes a spacious team room designed for team meetings and pre/post-practice debriefs. Attached to the team room is a well-organized laundry facility, ensuring that practice gear and uniforms are consistently cleaned and maintained, adding convenience for both players and coaching staff. The field house combines advanced resources and practical amenities to support all aspects of athletic development at West Harrison High School.
