It's Tee Time as West Wortham Students Enjoy Innovative, Educational Golf Field Trip

(September 26, 2024) - Today, West Wortham Elementary & Middle School became the first school in Mississippi to participate in an innovative environmental education outreach program that uses golf courses as environmental learning labs! 

About 12 fifth-grade gifted students in Mrs. Michelle Barrow’s class visited the Grand Bear Golf Club for the GCSAA First Green field trip. First Green is a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) program that focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) principles where students get hands-on learning opportunities in a real-life setting. The GCSAA First Green curriculum benefits students by helping them apply their classroom knowledge in an engaging outdoor setting while exposing them to careers in the golf industry.

The students rotated through interactive stations, including Photosynthesis, Environment and Audubon Certification, Tools, Equipment, and Careers in Golf, before eating lunch in the clubhouse. Benefits of GCSAA’s First Green include applying STEAM lessons learned in class, inspiring students, building community, strengthening futures, advancing golf, and having fun.
