HCSD Cuts Ribbon on New 'Dining Room on Wheels'

(June 4, 2024) – It was an exciting day as the Harrison County School District rolled out our brand-new “Mobile Dining Unit” to serve meals to children in the community!

Today, the district hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new Mobile Dining Unit. The 30-foot-enclosed trailer is a fully functional dining room on wheels that will support the district’s Free Summer Meals Program. The trailer will alternate between several locations this summer to serve free breakfast and lunch to children ages 18 and under.
“Food Insecurity doesn’t go away in the summer; it worsens. Over 70% of our 15,000 students receive subsidized meals by the federal government during the regular school year, giving our county a designation of 'Severe Need' by the USDA Food & Nutrition Services division,” said HCSD Child Nutrition Director Brad Barlow.
The Mobile Dining Unit is a convenient and efficient way to provide meals to children participating in summer camps or those who face transportation challenges. During the regular school year, the trailer may be used to provide meals for special school events like field trips and field days. The trailer comes equipped with onboard electricity, air conditioning, cafeteria seating, and handwashing stations.
“The Mobile Dining Trailer is an affordable solution for counties and municipalities that face food deserts and related food insecurity in their communities. The trailer is easily scalable with little to no maintenance required when not in use,” said Barlow.
School board members, district directors, school administrators, and other staff gathered to welcome this latest addition to the HCSD Child Nutrition Department’s fleet. Afterward, the trailer traveled to the Herbert Wilson Recreation Center in Gulfport to start its meal service.
“Having the ability to provide offsite free meals to children when not in school is a game changer and sets the stage for further program outreach,” said Barlow.
